About the project:

This is a platform to showcase the creative might of Wales: to highlight its strengths and explore its depths, to help make connections and to be a useful tool for those who want to learn more about Wales’ creative ecosystem. This atlas is a work in progress and will continue to evolve and grow as the creative industries do.

How to use the atlas:

The atlas explores the geographical distribution and scale of the creative industries across Wales broken down by creative sector. You can use this atlas to discover creative industries activity throughout Wales, such as numbers of companies and employees in specific creative sectors, where coworking spaces are located or the geography of creative cluster projects. Layers can be added or removed using the layer selector dropdown menus, with key insights provided on the right hand side. Select 'take a tour' below to explore more of what you can do with the atlas. We recommend using the atlas via a desktop computer for the best possible experience.

Creative industries:

The creative industries layer is based on the ORBIS database using the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) guidelines and the standard industrial classification of economic activities (SIC) codes for the creative industries. The table below shows the SIC codes and activities that are part of each creative industries sector. Data is depicted for 2019 (data is available for 2 years prior to research due to filing requirements). We aim to update the data regularly. Creative networks:

Creative Cardiff members: Creative Cardiff is a network of 3,000+ members which connects people working in any creative organisation, business or job in the Cardiff region. Cultural Freelancers Wales: Cultural Freelancers Wales is a new and evolving collective organisation for freelancers, by freelancers. Find out more and become part of the freelance communtiy map by visiting the Cultural Freelancers Wales website.

Innovation and funding:

Clwstwr projects: Participants from film and television companies, technology businesses and creative organisations have been awarded funding to research and develop (R&D) new products, services and experiences. Demographics:

Welsh index of multiple deprivation (WIMD): the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) is the Welsh Government’s official measure of relative deprivation for lower super output areas in Wales. It identifies areas with the highest concentrations of several different types of deprivation. WIMD ranks all small areas in Wales from 1 (most deprived) to 1,909 (least deprived) and groups them into deciles. The measure displayed represents the percentage of the population living in the top 20% most deprived areas in Wales (deciles 1 and 2). Source: Welsh Government 2019.
